Wakeful is an easy to install dash camera that detects when eyes are closed for longer than a few seconds and issues an alert to keep drivers awake. This was a collaborative project done with students of different disciplines including: engineering, computer science, business, and graphic design. In the span of one semester, we were given a budget to develop a product that solved a real life problem and determine its investment value. With the goal of reducing accidents caused by driver fatigue, our project combined expertise from engineering, software development, and user experience design. The purpose of this class and project is to emulate working in a competitive market and developing effective communication as a team (company).
The project began with extensive research on our target market which involved understanding the challenges faced by commercial and long distance drivers. A series of surveys and interviews were conducted to determine the pain points of potential users and eventually the usability of the product.
As one of three designers in this project, I had the opportunity to contribute primarily to the package design concept, brand iconography, pattern work and presentation deck.
The final part of our project involved presenting to a panel of experienced judges within each discipline. Our team showcased the functionality and effectiveness of Wakeful through a live demonstration and received first place out of several other teams.
Our hope when consumers approach our product is that it would easy to use unlike some technology where one look at the instruction manual leaves people feeling discouraged and further decreases the chance of them buying the product. We want users to be able to quickly identify what our product is about through the packaging, billboards, website, google ads, and social media.
